 Beliefs History Ministries Clergy

The Unchurched

The largest religious group in the world is the Roman Catholic Church. More than a billion people say they belong to that religious denomination. The number who actually attend services and follow all the rules of Rome is vastly smaller. Many Roman Catholic churches have few adherents or attendees. Some parishes don't even have a priest.

It is sad, in a way, but understandable. Rome (and other “mainstream“ groups) made mistakes, like having boatloads of rules and regulations while forgetting what is at the core of Jesus' teaching: mystical love.

The Old Catholic Church has a long history of following behind Romes truck, picking up the people who fall off their wagon and protecting those attacked by the Vatican. In fact, many of our priests are former Roman Catholic priests, monks, friars, sisters or nuns.

When Rome says you can't be married because you're divorced or gay, we raise our hand and say: Sure you can. When a grieving family is told that they can't have a church funeral for a loved one because he/she had some fault, we hug the family and whisper: Sure you can. It's what we do.

Each person has his or her own talents. We may have a member of the clergy who is a great administrator but is awful working with prisoners. All of our clergy say Mass, offer Absolution. In an emergency, anyone (even someone not in a formal church) can baptise someone.

Common ministries in the Old Catholic Church--

  • jail and prison visitation
  • hospital visitation (and Anointing of the Sick)
  • marriages
  • funerals

Kyrie eleison
Kyrie eleison, kyrie

The wind blows hard
Against this mountainside
Across the sea into my soul
It reaches into where I cannot hide
Setting my feet upon the road

My heart is old
It holds my memories
My body burns a gemlike flame
Somewhere between
The soul and soft machine
Is where I find myself again

Kyrie eleison
Down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison
Through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison
Where I'm going, will you follow
Kyrie eleison
On a highway in the light

When I was young
I thought of growing old
Of what my life
Would mean to me

Would I have followed
Down my chosen road
Or only wished
What I could be

Kyrie eleison
Down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison
Through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison
Where I'm going, will you follow
Kyrie eleison
On a highway in the light

Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh

Kyrie eleison
Down the road that I must travel
Kyrie eleison
Through the darkness of the night
Kyrie eleison
Where I'm going, will you follow
Kyrie eleison
On a highway in the light
